I will always love this film no matter how much times I've seen it, and it continues to be relevant and relatable, all these years later. Not a lot of filmmakers care about the small details, but you know for sure Menon does. We see each progression slowly but with great detail. Everything is done and shown with so much care. Whether it be the awkward teen years, the brash confidence of young adulthood, the confusion of post education, the tragedy and devastation of heartbreak and failure, and the rise from the failure. He showcases the journey of life so wonderfully too. There's so much honest convos in this film, so honest that you feel like its something straight out of your life. It's based around his life and upbringing, and its obviously dedicated towards his father. What makes this film so great is how Gautham Menon directed it. Ratnavelu is so amazing, he shows each stage of life with complete care and visual accuracy. Harris Jayaraj delivers an amazing score and songs that really just sit with you for years and years. Simran offers a subtle but nuanced portrayal of a loving wife and mother, who just wants the best for the family. You believe each transformation because he physically and mentally commits. Suriya just transforms himself into each stage of life in this film. They might have done big movies before and after this one, but none of them will ever have the same impact this film had on myself and the countless other people that have seen it. Suriya and Simran both deliver such amazing performances in this film. Like those films, Vaaranam Aayiram is a gold standard example of what a film about life should look like. Movies like Forrest Gump, Nayagan, and Thavamai Thavamirundhu showcased journeys of protagonists from their youth to adulthood. Suriya and Gautham Menon created one of the greatest character journey films I've ever seen. When I first watched this film in theaters, little did I know that the pair that brought us Kaakha Kaakha would deliver one of the greatest tamil cinema films of all time.
